Recently, we had a modified Nissan GT-R in our workshop suffering from a misfire. Our diagnostics pinpointed the issue to a specific cylinder, and upon removal, we found that the ceramic around the tip of the spark plug had failed. Fortunately, this engine avoided any damage, but we’ve seen cases where broken plug tips have caused serious issues—damaging cylinder bores, valves, and even turbos as debris exits through the exhaust.

Regular preventative spark plug replacement is a simple but crucial step in avoiding these costly failures.

How Often Should You Change GT-R Spark Plugs?

Nissan recommends replacing spark plugs every 5 years or 60,000 miles on a standard GT-R. However, for modified engines, we suggest a more frequent schedule:

✅ 660bhp+ builds – Change plugs every 2 years
✅ 1,000bhp+ builds – Change plugs annually

The NGK Standard GT-R plugs are reliable for cars up to 1,000bhp, offering a stable and consistent spark. For high-power builds exceeding 1,000bhp or track-focused cars, NGK offers a colder Motorsport plug with a smaller tip for improved durability.

Which Spark Plug Are Right For Your GT-R?

  • NGK Standard GT-R Plugs (£21.99 + VAT each) – Best for daily-driven GT-Rs, providing excellent reliability and longevity.
  • NGK Racing GT-R Plugs (£42.50 + VAT each) – Designed for 1,000bhp+ and track use. However, these can foul up over time if the car is frequently used for short trips or left unused for long periods.
