Race+ Intercooler Development for the Nissan GT-R

When we first developed our Race Intercooler back in 2011, the goal was simple. Create a cooling system that could properly support high powered GT-R builds running around 1,000bhp, without compromise.

At the time, that level of performance was pushing the limits of what most owners were aiming for. The result was a complete intercooler and pipework solution that delivered consistent charge air temperatures and long term reliability. Since then, over 230 kits have been supplied worldwide, proving the design works in real world use, not just on the dyno.

As with everything in this industry, things move on.

From Race to Race+

The first step in our intercooler evolution was the introduction of our Race+ Intercooler.

This version retained the proven Race pipework and intake design, but introduced a thicker core along with CNC machined end tanks, all produced in-house.

The focus was not just outright cooling, but also improving airflow through to the radiator, something particularly important for track use where sustained load is a factor.

The Race+ proved to be an effective step forward, especially for customers using their cars on track. This design was fitted to our Time Attack winning GT-R in 2022.

Why We Have Developed the Version 2 Race+ Intercooler

Over the past few years, we have continued to develop higher power packages for the GT-R. Most recently, this has included our revised turbo manifold kit, designed to support the next step in performance.

As power levels increase, so does the demand on every part of the system. One of the key areas we focused on was airflow into and out of the turbochargers.

This led to the development of a larger 90mm intake system. Compared to the original 76mm design, the increased diameter and shorter pipework allow the turbos to breathe more easily. In practice, this reduces surge and improves overall efficiency, particularly on larger turbo setups.

A Complete Redesign

With the introduction of the new turbo kit and 90mm intake system, it became clear that a more significant redesign was required.  The new Version 2 Race+ Intercooler fully utilises the additional space created by the revised pipework layout. The pipework has not only increased in size but the design has also been simplified, removing a number of silicone joiners to improve airflow and reduce potential restrictions. The revised routing also shortens sections of the intake path, helping improve response and overall efficiency.

One of the key advantages of this new layout is the space it has freed up at the front of the car. This has allowed us to fit a larger intercooler core, increasing cooling capacity to better support higher powered builds.

The current prototypes use hand fabricated end tanks as part of the testing process. Once finalised, these will transition to CNC machined components for production, ensuring consistency and strength across all units.

Testing and Results

As with all of our developments, this has not been a dyno only exercise.  The system has already been tested across dyno runs, road driving and track use on multiple cars including our own development cars. These results show good improvements in charge air temperatures, airflow and overall performance consistency.

What This Means for GT-R Owners

For customers pushing into higher power levels, particularly those running larger turbo setups, this new Version 2 Race+ Intercooler represents the next step in supporting reliable performance.

It is not just about increasing peak numbers, but maintaining control of temperatures and airflow so the car performs consistently, whether on the road or under extended track use.

We will be moving into full production in the coming weeks when our CNC parts are complete and we will share more data as testing continues.
