The GR Yaris, like all Toyotas, is an extremely durable performance car but as tuning of the 1.6 Turbo engine continues we are starting to see the limits of components reached. Litchfield has tuned a large number of GR Yaris’s to over 350bhp and at this power level we are starting to see occasional clutch slipping issues. The frequency of this depends on how the harshly the car is driven but with track days common in the GR it is worth considering an upgrade.
Exedy are the world leaders in clutch and friction technology and we have been using their products from our Subaru days all the way up to the most modern of Dual clutch gearbox like the GT-R and Porsche PDK. Exedy offer two different replacement clutches for the GR; Stage 1 is designed for higher clamping loads for road use and Stage 2 is designed for serious motorsport use where refinement is less important than performance.

Clutch Cover
Single Series clutch covers are designed to achieve a clamping load that is approximately 40% higher than the genuine part enabling a higher torque capacity. Ductile material is used for all pressure plates and high burst strength can be achieved in all temperature ranges.
Note: Single Series Clutch Kits with HD in the middle of a kit reference denote that the cover has a higher clamp load. e.g. Mitsubishi EVO Organic kit: MK04HD601
Clutch Disc
An ultra fibre friction facing is used which has high heat resistance and high burst strength characteristics. No steel back is required which can cause RPM "lock-out" and/or synchro damage. Superior in shift operations and half-engagement feel, this clutch disc is recommended for any motorsport or modified vehicle use.
The performance of a standard organic friction material usually suffers after slipping. Accordingly, EXEDY has developed the ultra fibre material. If fade is experienced it will recover after a short cooling down period.
Note: There are two variations of Organic kits for some models. For example, the Organic kit FK01H601 for the Subaru Impreza has a 6 spring disc and the kit FK01H1601 has a 4 spring disc. The 6 spring disc is best suited for track day or motorsport use, whereas the 4 spring disc is ideal for everyday driving as it delivers a smooth engagement and disengagement experience.
EXEDY Stage 2 Sports clutch kits are designed to handle the abuse of high power modified engines whist retaining adequate driveability.
The cerametallic friction material can handle much more abuse than stock type disc assemblies without slipping or fading. All EXEDY
Stage 2 cerametallic clutch discs have sprung center dampers to reduce the impact and shock loads transmitted through the drivetrain.

Manufactured using a unique metallic configuration and low density metallic material, T5001 Carbonrich, S-Type cerametallic discs are designed to be light weight; inertia is 10% lower than the genuine part. Stage 2 Sports discs have excellent heat dissipation characteristics.
Note: There are two variations of S-Type kits for some models. For example, the kit FK01T601 has a 3 paddle disc whereas the kit FK01T1601 has a 4 paddle disc. In comparison the 4 paddle disc provides a reduced pedal effort, whereas the lighter 3 paddle disc allows for a quicker shifting response.
